Repairing mold-damaged drywall is not difficult, but correcting the cause of the mold can often be challenging. Roof leaks, an improperly installed vapor barrier, leaky pipes, or constant contact with water from sinks, tubs, and showers can cause mold damage. Mold happens whenever moisture is constantly present. Mold spores attach to the paper facing of the drywall, the paper becomes a food source, and the mold colony propagates and grows. Long-term exposure to mold spores can be harmful, especially if a person is allergic to mold. You should consider consulting a mold removal specialist to determine the type of mold that is present, and you should always wear a face mask and gloves when working with mold.
Throughout the drying process, crews will stop by periodically to monitor how the drying is progressing. Gray water contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. Gray water may contain chemicals, bio-contaminants (fungal, bacterial, viral, algae), or other contaminants. Gray water that remains untreated for longer than 48 hours may escalate to Category 3.
How much drywall should you replace if you have drywall water damage? Generally speaking, if drywall has swelled or sagged 3/8 of an inch or more from the baseline, then you need to replace the entire sheet. Otherwise, you can cut out and water damage repair the water-stained portion. And remember to check the insulation behind the drywall for damage as well.
Mildew is a surface type of mold that won’t damage your home’s structure. But other types of mold cause rot. Appliance hoses. Broken hoses are among the most common causes of water damage. Regularly inspect hoses and hose fittings on washing machines, icemakers, and dishwashers for kinks, cracks, bulges, or deterioration. Replace standard rubber washing machine hoses every two to five years or more often if they are showing signs of wear. Consider using steel-reinforced hoses for longer life.
You can find out how old your water heater is by looking up the serial number on the manufacturer’s sticker near the top of the water heater. Make sure to regularly inspect your water heater to check for signs of moisture build-up, mold or corrosion. If your water isn’t as hot as it used to be or there’s rust coming from your faucets, it’s time to call a plumber or water heater specialist.

Position the drywall section in the opening, and use a helper to hold the new drywall in place. Install fasteners through the drywall into the wall or ceiling framing. You can use drywall nails or drywall screws. Screws are better because they cause much less damage to the internal structure of the drywall sheet during installation. Install fasteners every 9 inches on the perimeter, and every 12 inches in the field. If necessary, use a piece of plywood or one-by lumber for a backing and fastening surface behind any drywall edges that don't fall over framing.
